Dave Schweikert Defeats Challengers to Win Reelection in Arizona’s Swing District

Schweikert clinches victory in Arizona’s 1st District, a crucial swing area with a high percentage of college-educated suburban voters

Rep. Dave Schweikert (R-Ariz.) has been declared the winner of Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, as confirmed by The Hill/Decision Desk HQ. Schweikert, who has represented parts of Phoenix and Scottsdale for over ten years, successfully defeated Democrat Amish Shah on Tuesday, securing his eighth term in Congress.

This race was considered one of the most competitive in Arizona, with the district serving as a crucial swing area this election cycle. Its relevance stems from its large percentage of college-educated suburban voters, making it a bellwether for political trends.

Schweikert’s re-election comes after he and fellow Republicans criticized Arizona’s strict abortion law, calling it a “step too far.”

The incumbent benefited from the presence of former President Trump at the top of the Republican ticket, gaining additional support after narrowly winning reelection in 2022. Ahead of that race, Schweikert shifted from Arizona’s 6th Congressional District to the 1st.

At 62, Schweikert faced challenges during the race, including an abortion measure on the ballot and controversy surrounding GOP Senate candidate Kari Lake.

In April, he, along with other Arizona Republicans, publicly criticized the state Supreme Court’s decision to uphold one of the strictest abortion laws in the country, calling it “a step too far.”

Elected to Congress in 2010, Schweikert previously served in the state legislature and as Maricopa County treasurer. Though he had Trump’s endorsement in 2022, he ran without it in the 2024 race.
