Kevin Costner has voiced strong support for Liz Cheney, emphasizing that the former Republican congresswoman, who faced backlash from her party for her outspoken opposition to President-elect Trump, deserves recognition for her integrity.
During a live town-hall session on The Michael Smerconish Program on SiriusXM, Costner remarked that public service should be about doing what’s right for the people, not about advancing one’s career or ego. “Your time in office is just that—your time,” the former Yellowstone star asserted.
Reflecting on the state of the country, Costner stressed the importance of considering others. “We have to think about other people,” he added, expressing his pride in Cheney. He had previously endorsed her during the 2022 midterms, a move that aligned him with the Wyoming Republican, even sharing a photo where he wore a t-shirt that read, “I’m for Liz Cheney.”
Despite Cheney losing her GOP primary to Trump-backed Harriett Hageman, Costner continued to defend her, especially as she remained one of Trump’s fiercest Republican critics. Cheney’s vocal opposition to Trump escalated recently, with her denouncing his violent rhetoric toward her, calling it a “death threat.”
Costner lauded Cheney’s courage in his interview, calling her stance on the January 6th investigation a testament to her willingness to stand alone for truth. “She should be applauded,” he said, stressing that such individuals must be protected and respected.
He further stated that no one standing up for their beliefs in America should be threatened, reaffirming his personal commitment to defending those who take a stand, regardless of political alignment.
