Responding to questions about President-elect Trump’s choice of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for attorney general, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) stated that “elections have consequences.” Moskowitz described Trump’s decision as deliberate, characterizing Gaetz as “fiercely loyal” and “fiercely competent” in his remarks to NewsNation.
According to Moskowitz, Trump’s intentions for the Department of Justice were clear to voters, emphasizing that the election reflected those intentions. Trump officially announced on Wednesday that Gaetz is his pick for attorney general, contingent on Senate approval.
Trump praised Gaetz as a skilled attorney, trained at the College of William & Mary, and commended his focus on reforming the Department of Justice in Congress. Trump shared this message on Truth Social, underscoring Gaetz’s accomplishments.
Moskowitz mentioned that he and Gaetz have collaborated both in the House and the Florida state legislature, saying he has come to know him well over the years. Moskowitz recalled Gaetz’s involvement in his confirmation as Florida’s emergency management director, when Gaetz was part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’s transition team.
Gaetz is recognized as one of Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress, although he has faced opposition from some Republicans, most importantly in his highly publicized conflict with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whom Gaetz played a key role in ousting from his position.
