Gwen Stefani admits that before meeting her husband, Blake Shelton, she had no idea who he was. In an interview with The Guardian published on Thursday, Nov. 14, the 55-year-old singer was asked about the possibility of recording a country album with Shelton, 48.
Despite her limited experience with country music, Stefani expressed her enthusiasm about the idea. “I would love to,” she said, offering insights into their relationship as well.
Stefani shared that her lack of familiarity with country music meant that even though Shelton was already a major star, she hadn’t heard of him prior to their meeting. “I never listened to country music, so while Blake was super successful, I never even knew he existed before I met him,” she explained.
The two crossed paths in 2014 while working as coaches on The Voice, and Stefani revealed how much she enjoys singing alongside him. “He’s very humble and doesn’t realize how good he is,” she remarked about the “God’s Country” singer, whom she married in 2021. “There’s something so attractive about that.”
On Friday, Nov. 15, Stefani released her fourth studio album, Bouquet, where she reflects on the repercussion of her 2016 divorce from Gavin Rossdale, 59, and the joy she has found in her life with Shelton and her three sons: Kingston, 18, Zuma, 16, and Apollo, 10.
“The last four years of my life, I got engaged, then I got married and started my life over,” Stefani told PEOPLE.
She continued, sharing her childhood dream of marriage and family: “Something that I wanted since I was a little girl is to be married and have this love that I saw my parents have and have babies. That dream was completely ruined; it was crushed, and I had to figure out how I was going to move forward and make a new dream. And God putting Blake in my life was just that miracle.”
The album features a lively duet with Shelton titled “Purple Irises,” which they performed live at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards. Although Stefani is still relatively new to the country music scene, she made her Grand Ole Opry debut in 2022 alongside Shelton, where they performed their hits “Nobody But You” and “Happy Anywhere.”
“I’m so nervous, I’m so excited, this is one of those things that you don’t dream about if you’re me — and then all of a sudden I’m here with Blake Shelton,” Stefani told the crowd. “It’s a miracle, I’m so grateful, thank you so much.”
