Former Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards Receives Medal of Freedom from Biden

President Biden awards Cecile Richards the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her advocacy

On Wednesday, President Biden presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Cecile Richards, an influential advocate for abortion rights and the former president of Planned Parenthood.

Biden praised Richards for her leadership in key civil rights causes, emphasizing her dedication to advancing women’s reproductive rights, championing worker dignity, and motivating Americans to vote. He highlighted her lasting impact on these essential social movements.

Richards stepped down from Planned Parenthood in 2018 after a successful 12-year tenure, where she played a pivotal role in expanding access to affordable reproductive healthcare. She was also instrumental in encouraging the Democratic Party to prioritize abortion rights.

Cecile Richards’ legacy as a champion for justice recognized by President Biden’s top honor

Following her departure, Richards co-founded Supermajority, an organization focused on gender equity, and took on a leadership role as co-chair of the political action committee American Bridge 21st Century.

In 2023, Richards was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive and rare brain tumor, with a median survival rate of only 12 to 18 months. Biden, who lost his son Beau to glioblastoma in 2015, has a personal connection to this devastating illness.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded by the president to civilians who have made contributions to the country. Biden described Richards as a leader of extraordinary character, praising her enduring legacy, which he said can be seen in the lives she has touched, her remarkable family, and her ongoing efforts for equality, justice, and freedom.

Richards is the daughter of Ann Richards, the first woman elected governor of Texas, further cementing her family’s legacy of public service. In the past, Biden has honored numerous individuals with the medal, including civil rights leaders, political figures like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. James Clyburn, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, and actress Michelle Yeoh.
