Matt Gaetz Confirms Exit From Congress, Plans Support Role in Trump Administration Transition

Matt Gaetz, the former Florida representative, announced on a podcast Friday that he will not return to Congress for the 119th session starting in January, putting an end to speculation about his political future. Gaetz had resigned from the 118th session of Congress the previous week, leaving some uncertainty about whether he would continue serving. His decision to step away from Congress was made clear during an interview with podcaster Charlie Kirk.

Gaetz had been under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for several months, stemming from a 2021 Justice Department probe into allegations of sex trafficking. Although the DOJ chose not to file charges against him, the investigation fueled ongoing controversy. Speculation about Gaetz’s return to Congress increased after he withdrew from consideration for U.S. Attorney General in the Trump administration, which only added to the uncertainty surrounding his next move.

In his interview, Gaetz expressed support for the people running to take his place in Congress, calling them inspiring and dedicated to public service. He shared his optimism for the future of Northwest Florida, emphasizing that new leadership would bring the region to new levels of success. Gaetz highlighted the commitment of those stepping up to serve, demonstrating his confidence in the area’s future representation.

While Gaetz ruled out a return to Congress, he revealed that he plans to assist the incoming Trump administration, particularly in staffing roles. He showed strong support for former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, whom Trump had chosen to replace him as U.S. Attorney General. Gaetz praised Bondi’s legal expertise and described her as a “bright legal mind” who would be a great fit for the position if confirmed by the Senate.

Gaetz’s decision to withdraw from consideration for the attorney general position came just hours before the interview. He explained that his potential nomination had become a distraction due to the ongoing allegations against him. Acknowledging the impact of the controversy on the Trump administration’s transition, Gaetz emphasized his continued support for Trump and said he would remain involved in the president-elect’s efforts in other ways.
