This idea has begun to take shape, albeit in a somewhat unconventional form. Trump has revealed plans for a new initiative called the “Department of Government Efficiency,” which will be led by Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. However, contrary to the name, this will not be a formal government department.
Instead, the entity will function as an advisory body providing guidance on reducing federal waste, slashing regulations, and improving performance across federal agencies.
Although Musk has claimed he could reduce the federal budget by $2 trillion, it remains unclear how the task force will operate or what influence it will wield, especially considering Musk’s preference for focusing on his businesses, such as Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink.
Beyond government reform, Musk’s role in Trump’s administration extends to international matters. After the election, Musk was invited to participate in two official calls with Trump, speaking with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Musk’s close relationship with Trump seems to position him as a trusted advisor, even as Musk continues to offer input on cabinet selections and other transition matters. He has also spent time at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, underscoring the close nature of their collaboration.

In 2017, Musk criticized Trump’s decision to withdraw from the agreement, stating that “climate change is real.” This stands in stark contrast to Trump’s ongoing dismissal of climate change as a “scam.”
