The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, has embraced numerous responsibilities this year within the Royal Family. Recognized as a close ally to Princess Kate, often referred to as her “royal sister,” Sophie recently led the Armistice Service at England’s National Arboretum on her own.
Praised for her professionalism, she is considered by some as the “Royal Family’s secret weapon.” Adding to her growing list of commitments, Sophie has now taken on a major role previously held by another family member.
On November 25, the charity Plan International UK announced Sophie as their new royal patron, succeeding her late father-in-law, Prince Philip, in this position. Highlighting her advocacy, the charity shared on X that Sophie is a passionate supporter of women’s rights and has witnessed the profound challenges faced by young women and girls in times of conflict.
They expressed excitement about collaborating with her to spotlight these critical issues. Plan International emphasized Sophie’s dedication in a statement, noting her recent visit to the Chad-Sudan border. During the trip, she observed the effects of the ongoing conflict and met with women and girls aided by the charity.
With over 10 million displaced in Sudan, the Duchess aims to address the disproportionate impact on women and children, focusing on reducing violence and raising awareness about the struggles faced by girls in such crises. Rose Caldwell, CEO of Plan International UK, expressed enthusiasm for Sophie’s involvement, stating they were thrilled to have her as the charity’s new patron.
Caldwell highlighted the barriers many girls face globally, from limited access to education and personal safety to restrictive stereotypes. She praised the Duchess’s commitment, emphasizing how her support amplifies efforts to empower girls to enact meaningful change in their lives and communities.
