No Doubts: Lawler Backs Kash Patel for the FBI Leadership Position

Trump highlights Patel’s role in addressing the “Russia Hoax” in a Truth Social post

On Sunday, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) expressed his support for President-elect Trump’s appointment of Kash Patel to lead the FBI. When asked by CNN’s Kasie Hunt on “State of the Union” if he had any reservations about Patel taking on the role, Lawler replied, “No.” He emphasized that Trump campaigned on the promise of reforming both the FBI and the Department of Justice, suggesting that the reaction to Patel’s appointment should not be surprising.

Reactions to Patel’s selection as FBI head have been mixed among lawmakers and former officials, though Republicans have largely endorsed the choice. Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe criticized the decision, stating, “It’s a terrible development for the men and women of the FBI and also for the nation that depends on a highly functioning professional independent Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Lawler pointed out the prevailing lack of confidence that many Americans have in the FBI and the Department of Justice, calling the situation “terrible.” He underscored the importance of having a reformed system that effectively serves the American people and prosecutes criminals. “And that should be the objective and the goal of every American,” he stated, expressing hope for positive changes under Pam Bondi at the Department of Justice and Kash Patel at the FBI.

In a Saturday post on Truth Social, Trump praised Patel, referring to him as “a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People.” He highlighted Patel’s significant contributions in addressing the so-called “Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax,” framing him as a champion for truth, accountability, and the Constitution.

The Hill has sought further comments from the Justice Department regarding the appointment. In a statement to The Hill on Sunday, the FBI affirmed that its agents remain dedicated to protecting Americans from various threats. “Director Wray’s focus remains on the men and women of the FBI, the people we do the work with, and the people we do the work for,” the agency added.
