Experiencing financial difficulties due to the costs of medical treatments, James Van Der Beek is navigating life after a colorectal cancer diagnosis. On Friday, the 47-year-old actor took to his Instagram Story to encourage his followers to purchase a football jersey from his iconic 1999 film, “Varsity Blues,” promising to have them signed in time for Christmas.
In the promotional images, Van Der Beek sported the jersey featuring the name of his character, backup quarterback Jonathan “Mox” Moxon. He candidly expressed the challenges he faces, writing, “#cancerisexpensive,” accompanied by a red heart.

Recently, Van Der Beek revealed that he is struggling with the “financial burden” of his illness while promoting his merchandise. On November 22, he shared his excitement about celebrating the 25th anniversary of “Varsity Blues” with a limited edition #4 Moxon jersey, each personally autographed by him.
He further stated, “100% of my net proceeds will go to families recovering from the financial burden of cancer (including my own).” Earlier this month, the “Dawson’s Creek” star disclosed his cancer battle after being compelled to go public because of threats from an unnamed tabloid.
“I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,” he told People. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.” Since the diagnosis, Van Der Beek, who shares six children with his wife, Kimberly, has aimed to maintain a positive outlook despite his ongoing health challenges.
In a recent cover story for People, he described himself as “cautiously optimistic” and noted his energy levels were “great,” stating, “I’m in a place of healing.” “I’ll circle back and let you know when I’ve been out of the woods completely for what feels like a responsible amount of time,” he added.
On Thanksgiving, Van Der Beek expressed gratitude on Instagram, reflecting on what has been a challenging year. He wrote about his appreciation for the life changes cancer has prompted, the support from friends during this difficult time, and the new understanding he has gained regarding his body and nutrition.
