This week, the ongoing dysfunction of House Republicans became even more evident with a series of events that highlighted the limits of Donald Trump’s influence over the GOP. A bipartisan government funding deal that would have kept the government operational was derailed by Elon Musk and Trump, who used their significant platforms to push Republicans to block the agreement.
Despite the bipartisan nature of the deal, which included crucial funding for disaster relief and pediatric cancer research, House Republicans listened to Trump and rejected the compromise, setting the stage for more conflict and potential gridlock in the future.
However, Trump’s ability to command the GOP was less effective when it came to getting Republicans to support an alternative funding bill that he had endorsed. Despite his urging, the bill, which stripped out Democratic priorities and included a suspension of the debt limit, failed to pass due to opposition from 38 Republicans.
These conservatives were particularly opposed to the idea of suspending the debt limit, which many view as an important fiscal check on government spending, and were unwilling to back a bill that did not align with their more conservative economic principles.
The debt limit, a complex and irrational part of U.S. governance, became a focal point of the debate. While Trump sought to suspend or eliminate the debt limit to avoid complications with his economic plans, including large tax cuts, many conservatives were not willing to back such a move.

The resistance from a significant portion of House Republicans suggests that Trump may struggle to maintain control over the party’s legislative agenda, particularly as the GOP navigates a slim majority in the House in 2025.
Looking ahead, Trump’s ability to push through his legislative priorities in Congress appears uncertain. Although Republicans are set to control both chambers in 2025, their narrow majority in the House will make it difficult to advance major policies without Democratic support. Many Republicans remain concerned about deficits and spending cuts, particularly those from swing districts.
While Trump could attempt to exert pressure through primary challenges or charges of disloyalty, the challenges within his own party suggest that his influence over Congress may not be as strong as it once was, potentially limiting his effectiveness as president if he returns to the White House.
