The Stranger Things actress has been in a relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011, though she has kept their personal life mostly private. Recently, she shared a bit more about her long-term relationship with Hahn.
During a July 2024 interview with Harper’s BAZAAR, Ryder expressed her gratitude and affection for Hahn, saying, “He’s truly amazing. I feel very fortunate.” So, who is Scott Mackinlay Hahn? Here’s a closer look at the man behind Ryder’s long-term romance.
A Fashion Designer with a Green Focus
Hahn is a fashion designer and co-founder of Loomstate, a brand committed to environmentally friendly and socially conscious fashion. In a 2012 Time interview, he described Loomstate’s mission to use organic cotton to reduce the environmental impact of traditional cotton farming. Loomstate even designed Chipotle’s uniforms that same year.
In a 2010 Racked interview, Hahn explained that his motivation for starting the company was to combine sustainability with profitability. “Even though we’re focused on being eco-friendly and inspired by nature, we aimed to make our factory profitable. We needed to set high standards for our supply chain, and using certified organic cotton was crucial to that,” he said.
Supportive of Ryder’s Career
Despite his generally low profile, Hahn has been present at several of Ryder’s public events. The couple made their red carpet debut together at the Stranger Things season 1 premiere in July 2016.
Hahn also attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January 2020 and the Stranger Things season 4 premiere in May 2022. Most recently, he supported Ryder at the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premiere during the Venice Film Festival in August 2024.
An East Coast Native
While Hahn occasionally joins Ryder for events in Los Angeles, he is primarily based in New York City. Ryder shared with Harper’s Bazaar that Hahn grew up on Fire Island before moving to Brooklyn.
In a 2010 Racked interview, Hahn discussed how living in Bushwick influenced his lifestyle. “Bushwick gave me the light and space that New York City couldn’t. It’s an inspiring place, even though it’s not where I initially thought I’d live,” he said. His Williamsburg home is also eco-friendly, constructed with reclaimed materials.
Low-Key Social Media Presence
Hahn avoids social media, with his Twitter account (@kelpsav) having few updates. On April 26, 2017, he retweeted a post from Loomstate about transparency and accountability. On September 6, 2021, he shared a photo of Ryder with the late Michael K. Williams, who passed away that month.
Unaware of Ryder’s Fame
Ryder revealed in a June 2022 Harper’s Bazaar interview that Hahn was initially unaware of her celebrity status. “He mistook me for Milla Jovovich and complimented me on The Fifth Element,” she said. Despite this mix-up, Ryder valued Hahn’s detached approach to the entertainment industry.
Marriage Uncertain
Although the couple has been together for over a decade, Ryder has expressed uncertainty about marriage. In a 2016 interview, she mentioned, “I’m not sure about marriage. I’d rather not marry than go through multiple divorces. My parents’ long-lasting love has set very high standards for me.”
