Steve Martin’s Previous Divorce and Its Impact on His Life Before Anne Stringfield

The fourth season of Only Murders in the Building has returned, much to the delight of its fans, including ourselves. The series continues to capture audiences with its stellar ensemble, featuring Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin.

The buzz around the show intensified when Steve Martin and Meryl Streep—who portrays Loretta Durkin—appeared together on the red carpet for the season premiere, leading many to speculate about a possible real-life romance. However, Martin’s personal romantic history is just as intriguing.

Martin’s second marriage to Anne Stringfield began in 2007 after a deep connection grew from their early interactions

Steve Martin’s first marriage was to actress Victoria Tennant in 1986. Tennant, a British actress known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale, Flowers in the Attic, and L.A. Story, which also starred Martin, ended in divorce in 1994. Martin has generally kept quiet about this period but shared insights in his Apple TV+ documentary, STEVE! “I married Victoria Tennant because I liked her a lot,” Martin revealed. “She was smart, funny, and English. But the relationship kind of defaulted into romance, and I felt I should get married, which isn’t a great reason.”

Martin’s second marriage is to writer Anne Stringfield. They met in the mid-2000s when Anne was a fact-checker at The New York Times and Steve was a guest columnist. Their early interactions led to a deeper connection, as Martin recounted in his documentary. “She has one of the most important qualities—kindness,” Martin told People.

Married in a surprise ceremony in 2007 at their LA home, the couple welcomed their daughter Mary in 2012. They keep their daughter private, rarely sharing her public appearances. Martin reflected in his documentary on the profound love he felt after becoming a parent, acknowledging that a later start in fatherhood allowed him to be more present. “I think if I’d had a child earlier, I might have been a terrible father because I would have been too focused on my career,” he said.
