Despite the emotional turbulence following their separation, Jax Taylor is grappling with the end of his marriage to Brittany Cartwright. On August 27, Cartwright, 35, officially sought a divorce from Taylor, 45, citing “irreconcilable differences,” as revealed by PEOPLE.
Her filing includes a request for primary custody of their 3-year-old son, Cruz, while allowing Taylor visitation rights. This legal step comes after Cartwright had previously announced they were taking a break from each other.
A source close to Taylor has shared that he is dealing with a mix of emotions. “Jax acknowledges that ending the marriage is the right decision, but he’s saddened by how things have come to play,” the insider explained. “It’s been an emotionally challenging time for him, and he’s trying to stay strong for Cruz.”
Cartwright, on the other hand, views the divorce as a necessary move. “For Brittany, this has been a long time coming,” said the source. “She feels this is the best choice for both herself and her son, despite the difficulty of the decision.”
The primary focus for both Cartwright and Taylor now is to establish a constructive co-parenting relationship. “Their priority is to transition into amicable co-parenting for Cruz, and they hope this step will bring them closer to that goal,” the source added.
Earlier, Cartwright had mentioned their separation during the February 29 episode of their podcast, When Reality Hits. This announcement preceded the launch of their Bravo series, The Valley, with Season 2 in the works. Taylor has also recently completed a 30-day mental health treatment program. Cartwright’s divorce filing seeks to end spousal support for both parties.
