Growing up, Patrick played football, basketball, and baseball, excelling at all three sports. However, Pat believed his son had the most potential in baseball.
“He practically lived in the clubhouse, was always around the game, and excelled on the baseball field,” Pat told the Los Angeles Times. “I figured he’d pursue baseball since he was a fantastic shortstop, led his teams in hitting, and could throw 97 mph.”
Pat had even suggested Patrick quit football after his sophomore year to focus on baseball, believing it would be a waste of time otherwise. He also feared his son could get injured.
Randi, however, encouraged Patrick to reflect and pray on his decision, leading him to continue playing football. Today, Pat credits his son’s multi-sport background with shaping his success as a quarterback, blending skills from basketball and baseball into his football game.
