Selena Gomez has made it clear that if she ever gets married, she will do so while retaining her own identity. In a recent cover story for Vanity Fair published on September 9, the 32-year-old singer and actress shared that she has no intention of changing her last name, regardless of what the future may bring.
Addressing her relationship with Benny Blanco and the possibility of marriage, Gomez emphasized that neither she nor her family are pressuring Blanco into making a commitment. She noted, “We always make sure we’re protecting what we have, but there’s no rules.”
“I want him to always be himself,” Gomez continued. “I always want to be myself.” Gomez’s commitment to being herself extends to keeping her name, which she has used throughout her career since her early days on Barney & Friends. From Wizards of Waverly Place to Rare Beauty, her name has become synonymous with her work.
“I’m not changing my name no matter what,” she stated firmly. “I am Selena Gomez. That’s it.”
While Gomez did not specifically mention marriage plans with Blanco, she expressed deep affection for him, noting that she has “never been loved this way.” She described Blanco, whom she began dating in July 2023 after years of friendship, as “a complete light in my life” and “my best friend.”
Blanco has expressed a desire for marriage in the future, and Gomez addressed his comments in her Vanity Fair interview. She laughed about Blanco’s remarks from The Howard Stern Show, where he joked about needing to “get my act together” before proposing. “After the interview, I was dying laughing,” Gomez said, playfully questioning if there was anything else Blanco wanted to reveal.
Blanco echoed Gomez’s sentiments, describing her as “the coolest, nicest, sweetest” and affirming that she is indeed his “best friend.” Additionally, Gomez has shared how spending time with Blanco, including cooking together, has had a grounding effect on her.
At a Rare Beauty virtual event on September 4, she talked about her enjoyment of fresh foods and gardening, attributing her interest to Blanco. “It sounds so silly and minuscule but the older you get the more that you realize that it’s OK to just be simple and have simplicity,” she remarked.
