Shailene Woodley is contemplating the impact that past relationships have had on her life. During a recent interview with Bustle to promote her upcoming Starz limited series Three Women, Woodley, 32, revealed her aversion to pretense, a perspective she adopted after experiencing heartbreak.
“I give all of myself,” she shared. “I used to be someone who would continue to give even if disrespected, but now, if you cross me, I simply say, ‘Thank you for that information. Have a beautiful life.’ Not interested.” In Three Women, Woodley stars alongside DeWanda Wise and Betty Gilpin in an adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s 2019 novel.
When asked by Bustle what led her to stop trying to meet others’ expectations, Woodley responded, “A heart that healed and then broke again. I repeatedly fell for the unavailable.” She elaborated, “I’m very open as a person. I love easily and care deeply, but my love and care are not taken lightly.”
Though Woodley did not name names, she was filming Three Women from October 2021 to May 2022. According to PEOPLE, Woodley and her former fiancé Aaron Rodgers ended their relationship in February 2022, briefly reconciled, and then separated again in April 2022.
“It’s taken me a long time to realize that it’s not my responsibility to fix or heal a relationship, but to protect the deep love and care I have for the world and those close to me,” Woodley told Bustle. “This understanding has allowed me to move on without needing to comprehend why things didn’t come to light as I might have hoped.”
In January 2023, Woodley described her experience filming the series as one of the “darkest” times in her life, speaking with Net-a-Porter’s digital magazine PORTER. She recalled, “It was challenging to film because I was enduring a very difficult personal period; it was winter in New York, and my personal life was in turmoil. I was grateful for the chance to work, cry, and process my emotions through my character.”
Three Women is set to premiere on Starz on Friday, September 13.
