Jennifer Lopez and Matt Damon continue to maintain a strong friendship despite her separation from Ben Affleck. Following their group photos at the Unstoppable premiere on Friday, Sept. 6, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), a source shared with PEOPLE that Lopez is “very close with Matt” and “enjoyed spending time” with him.
The two were seen engaged in a “deep conversation” during the Unstoppable afterparty, which occurred after the movie’s premiere, according to a previous report from PEOPLE. Lopez, 53, and Damon chatted for more than 20 minutes at the afterparty, held at EPOCH Bar & Kitchen Terrace at The Ritz-Carlton. According to the insider, Lopez was seated outside with Damon’s wife, Luciana, and co-star Don Cheadle when Damon came over to join them.

“Jen and Matt shared a long and meaningful conversation,” the source mentioned, adding that the two friends exchanged laughter and serious moments, even clasping hands for several minutes as they spoke.
Affleck, who co-produced Unstoppable, was absent from the event. The film is a project from Artists Equity, the production company co-founded by Affleck and Damon.
Unstoppable tells the inspiring real-life story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler born with one leg who achieved an NCAA national championship in 2011. Lopez plays Robles’ mother, Judy Robles, and received a standing ovation at the end of the film’s TIFF screening.
During the post-screening Q&A, Lopez highlighted the importance of honoring the story. “My role was to make sure Judy and Anthony felt secure, trusting us to share their story respectfully and truthfully,” she said. “It’s one of the most beautiful and inspiring stories I’ve ever seen brought to the screen.”
The TIFF event marked Lopez’s first major public appearance since she filed for divorce from Affleck on Aug. 20, after two years of marriage. That same day, Affleck was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a navy suit and sunglasses.
Sources previously revealed that Affleck was not expected to attend TIFF, though Lopez and Damon were confirmed to be present. Unstoppable will be in select theaters in December and is set to stream on Prime Video soon.
