Michaela DePrince, Sierra Leonean-American Ballerina

Michaela Mabinty DePrince, renowned for her inspiring journey from an orphan in Sierra Leone to a celebrated ballerina, has passed away at the age of 29. Her story touched hearts around the world after being featured in the 2011 documentary First Position, and her talent earned her a place as a principal soloist with the Boston Ballet.

DePrince’s early years were marked by hardship, but she found hope through adoption by an American family, moving to the U.S. where her passion for dance grew. In a 2015 interview, she shared how dance had always been her refuge and purpose, driving her to pursue a professional career in the ballet world.

Michaela DePrince’s legacy endures through her remarkable achievements in ballet and the lives she inspired with her story of perseverance

She trained at the prestigious American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School before joining the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 2012. Her impressive talent also led her to dance with the Dutch National Ballet, and in 2021, she became a principal soloist at Boston Ballet. The sad news of her passing was announced through a heartfelt message on her official Instagram account on September 13.

“With deep sorrow, we announce the loss of Michaela Mabinty DePrince, whose exceptional artistry touched countless lives and whose strength inspired many,” the message began.

Her team reflected on her life, highlighting her determination and resilience. They spoke of her unwavering commitment to dance and her impact beyond the stage, noting that her spirit shone brightly through both her humanitarian efforts and her artistry. “Michaela was a symbol of hope, showing that no matter how dark the beginning, light and beauty can emerge.”

While no cause of death has been provided, her legacy remains profound. The statement emphasized that though her time was short, her influence will continue to inspire future generations. “We send our love and prayers to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable story.”

DePrince is survived by five sisters and two brothers. Her sister Mia shared her grief in a moving Facebook post, recalling their shared childhood in Africa. “It’s hard to believe that my beautiful sister is no longer here,” she wrote. “From the beginning, we dreamed together, creating our own ballets in the orphanage.”

Mia spoke of how their adoptive parents encouraged their dreams, and how Michaela blossomed into the accomplished ballerina many admired. “Her impact was felt not only on stage but in the lives of the children she helped through her outreach efforts.”

The DePrince family has asked for privacy during this time of mourning, and they plan to hold a private memorial service in her honor.

Boston Ballet also issued a statement, expressing their deep sadness at the loss of Michaela. “We feel fortunate to have known her. She was a beautiful dancer and an even more incredible person. Her absence will be deeply felt by all of us.”
