Selena Gomez has proven herself to be a true Friends fan once again. Just days before the 2024 Emmy Awards, where she’s in the running for outstanding actress in a comedy series for her role in Only Murders in the Building, Gomez gave a hilarious demonstration of her “losing face” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Viewers quickly noticed how similar her reaction was to an iconic Friends moment.
In season 7 of the beloved show, Jennifer Aniston’s character Rachel coaches Joey (played by Matt LeBlanc) on how to act if he doesn’t win at the Soapy Awards. Gomez’s facial expressions during her appearance on Fallon’s show drew strong parallels to Rachel’s tutorial, sparking fan comparisons.
As speculation grew over whether the resemblance was intentional, Gomez addressed the chatter on her Instagram Stories, humorously confirming the connection. “Facts. @jenniferaniston taught me too lo’,” the 32-year-old wrote alongside a video showing the similarities between her “losing face” and Rachel’s from the Friends episode.
In the original sitcom scene, Rachel advises Joey to perfect his “gracious loser face,” a look he can use when the cameras are on him and he needs to show disappointment while still acknowledging that the winner deserved it.
When Gomez appeared on The Tonight Show, Fallon asked her, alongside co-stars Martin Short and Steve Martin, to try their own versions of the expression. Gomez has never been shy about her love for Friends or her admiration for Aniston. The two have been close friends for years, and in 2020, Gomez shared how Friends was a staple of her childhood.
While guest-hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2020, Aniston heard Gomez recall how she watched Friends religiously every Thursday night with her mom, and how she even cried when the series ended. “Rachel was my life,” Gomez admitted, to which Aniston sweetly responded, “Selena, you’ve always been so sweet. You’re a true fan, and it’s amazing.”
At the upcoming Emmy Awards, both Gomez and Aniston are nominated for their work, but fortunately, they aren’t competing directly. Gomez is nominated for Only Murders in the Building, while Aniston earned a nod for The Morning Show.
After receiving her first-ever Emmy nomination, Gomez celebrated with a cake that read, “Congratulations Emmy Nominee!” and shared her excitement on Instagram, expressing how honored and grateful she was for the recognition.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gomez described the experience as “crazy,” saying that just being part of such a well-regarded show was a huge honor. She reflected on how lucky she felt to be in the company of so many great shows and to have this opportunity.
She also shared a touching moment, revealing that her co-stars, Short and Martin, had sent her flowers to celebrate her nomination. Though the trio wasn’t able to be together, Gomez looked forward to reuniting with them to celebrate in the future.
