The Reason Britney Spears Will Probably Keep Paying Child Support to Kevin Federline After Jayden Turns 18

Despite her younger son turning 18 this week, Britney Spears is expected to continue paying child support to her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. Although both of Spears’ sons, Jayden, who is now 18, and Sean, who will be 19 next month, are legally adults, Spears remains obligated to provide financial support.

According to Mark Vincent Kaplan, Federline’s attorney, California law mandates that child support continues until the child graduates high school or reaches 19, whichever comes first. Kaplan explained to PEOPLE that the obligation to pay child support extends until the child finishes high school if they are still enrolled on their 18th birthday. Jayden is expected to graduate in November, so Spears’ payments will align with this requirement.

A source close to Spears mentioned that she is committed to supporting her sons as they sail through their futures. “Britney has plans for the boys’ future and will do whatever she can and will always continue to love and support them,” the source stated. No immediate response was provided by Spears’ representative to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In a September 2022 interview with The Daily Mail, Jayden shared his and his brother’s evolving perspectives on their relationship with their mother. He expressed hope for reconciliation, noting, “I 100 percent think this can be fixed.” He added, “It’s just going to take a lot of time and effort. When she gets better, I really want to see her again.”

Addressing his mother directly, Jayden said, “I love you a lot, I hope for the best for you. Maybe one day we can sit down like this and talk again.” In 2023, Spears’ sons relocated to Hawaii with their father, Kevin Federline, his wife Victoria Prince, and their two children, Peyton and Jordan. Federline cited career opportunities and a job offer for Prince as reasons for the move.

Kaplan mentioned in May 2023 that Spears had agreed to the relocation, noting it as a beneficial opportunity for Federline and his family. “It’s an opportunity for Kevin and his wife, and the boys are ready to get away from the L.A. microscope,” he said.

A source confirmed that Federline initially sought Spears’ permission for the move, and another source assured that Spears remains devoted to her children’s well-being. “Britney has always faithfully supported her children and wants them to be happy,” the source added.
