Embracing his new role as a grandfather, Michael Strahan expressed his excitement during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 23.
The Good Morning America anchor, 52, joyfully announced that his eldest daughter, Tanita, welcomed a baby boy named Onyx at 2:30 AM on September 22. While he finds the experience of becoming a grandparent “fantastic,” Strahan also admitted he’s grappling with the reality of being old enough to hold that title.
After finishing his work at Fox the previous day, Strahan shared a touching moment of holding Onyx, pretending to cradle the infant in his arms. “I’m going to get you so spoiled and give you back to your parents,” he joked. Despite the joy he feels, he confessed, “It’s the most amazing feeling, but I don’t feel old enough.”
Strahan revealed that a common question people are asking is what name Onyx will call him. “I don’t know!” he exclaimed, contemplating the possibilities. “I almost want to do a survey.” Fallon joined in, suggesting alternatives like “Papa.” “Yeah,” Strahan replied, “Papa, Gap-pa, like I don’t know.”
The audience erupted in laughter at the new grandfather’s humorous naming ideas, with Fallon calling it “hilarious” and expressing excitement for him. “I’m so happy for my daughter Tanita and her boyfriend,” Strahan remarked, affectionately noting that Onyx is a “great addition to the family.”
Tanita, a 32-year-old illustrator based in Los Angeles, is the eldest of four children. She shares a close bond with Strahan, who had her with his first wife, Wanda Hutchins. Although born in Germany, Tanita spent her early years in Houston, Texas, until her parents’ divorce, after which she moved back to Germany with her mother.
