Despite her roles portraying complex mother figures, Marcia Gay Harden is a dedicated mother to her three children: Eulala, Hudson, and Julitta. All three kids were born to Harden and her ex-husband Thaddaeus Scheel, whom she married in 1996. Eulala arrived in 1998, followed by twins Hudson and Julitta in 2004. After nearly 15 years of marriage, Harden filed for divorce in 2012.
In a 2019 interview with PEOPLE Now, Harden acknowledged her protective nature as a parent. “I wouldn’t say I’m overly restrictive,” she stated. “I want my children to have the freedom to make their own mistakes, but I aim to guide them through those mistakes.”
During a 2023 telethon addressing anti-LGBTQ legislation, she expressed pride in her children’s identities. “All my children identify as queer,” Harden shared. “My eldest is non-binary, my son is gay, and my youngest is fluid. They teach me something new every day.”
In February 2024, she reflected on her parenting approach, emphasizing the importance of balance. “If you ask my kids, each will have a different perspective. They might say I was ‘strict’ at times, but they’d agree that I’m ‘hands-on,’ and that’s accurate,” she remarked. “I strive to be engaged in their lives.”
Here’s a closer look at Marcia Gay Harden’s three children: Eulala, Hudson, and Julitta.
Eulala Grace Scheel, 26
The eldest of Harden’s children, Eulala Grace, was born on September 23, 1998, and generally maintains a low profile, only making occasional public appearances.
Though Eulala stays out of the limelight, she had a brief acting career as a child, appearing in Pollock (2000), as well as in Whip It and Workaholics.
In 2020, Harden revealed to PEOPLE Now that Eulala graduated from Bennington College, though her specific field of study remains unclear. The actress praised her daughter for continuing to pursue sculpture, ceramics, and film during the pandemic, while also noting Eulala was “devastated” about missing a graduation ceremony.
“It’s more outstanding for art students to showcase their work than just walk across a stage,” she explained. “They want to present their projects and engage with people in the art community.” To cope with this disappointment, Eulala created an art commune by inviting seven classmates to their home in the Catskills to complete their final year together.
“They formed a creative community,” Harden said. “It was incredibly inspiring. This graduating class has gained unique experiences that we could never have imagined.”
Hudson Harden Scheel, 20
On April 22, 2004, Harden gave birth to twins Hudson and Julitta in New York. During a 2020 interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, she shared that Hudson came out as gay in seventh grade.
“I thought it was incredibly brave of him,” Harden recalled during her Zoom conversation with Clarkson. Like Eulala, Hudson generally prefers privacy but briefly ventured into beauty vlogging in 2018 with a YouTube video where he transformed his mother’s look for the red carpet.
According to his Instagram bio, Hudson graduated from the Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2022 and shortly after began attending the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, which specializes in dance, drama, music, production, and film.
To celebrate Hudson’s move to the UK, Harden posted a heartfelt message on Instagram in 2022. “After 18 years of listening to him sing and chatter, it feels quiet now! So proud of you, Huddie. I miss your noise and miss YOU,” she wrote alongside photos of him and Eulala in Scotland.
Julitta Dee Scheel, 20
Along with Hudson, Julitta Dee was born on April 22, 2004. In 2023, Harden described her daughter as “fluid.” Among her siblings, Julitta is often seen accompanying her mother at red carpet events. Harden shared on Instagram that they attended the 2023 Tony Awards together, and they also walked the red carpet at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys.
Julitta appears to have inherited her mother’s acting talent. In 2018, she secured a recurring role in the drama Kidding, which starred Jim Carrey, and she also made a guest appearance on Trophy Wife, a show where Harden had a recurring role.
During the pandemic in 2020, Harden mentioned that they celebrated the twins’ 16th birthdays with a drive-by party. Although restrictions prevented Julitta and Hudson from obtaining their licenses, Harden noted that her children accepted the situation gracefully.
“I’ve found that both my twins are more adept at accepting circumstances beyond their control than I am,” she said. In February 2024, Harden expressed her deep commitment to parenting Julitta and her siblings.
“Raising children is the overall masterclass,” she said. “I’ve learned to appreciate each child’s unique beauty and to set aside expectations. Finally, I want them to lead happy lives.”
