The Life-Changing Wisdom Kate Winslet Learned from Emma Thompson on Set

English Actress, Kate Winslet and British Actress/Screenwriter, Emma Thompson

Emma Thompson’s thoughtful advice to Kate Winslet has resonated with the latter throughout her career. At 48, Winslet reflects on her early experiences in the film industry, particularly her time working with the more seasoned Thompson, now 65, who not only starred in but also penned the screenplay for the 1995 film adaptation of Sense & Sensibility.

Their on-screen chemistry as sisters blossomed into a genuine friendship. During a recent discussion with moderator Josh Horowitz at the 92NY Center for Culture & Arts in New York City on September 23, Winslet expressed her admiration for Thompson’s perspective. “She possesses a groundedness and clarity about the industry as a whole,” Winslet noted. “She was quite protective of me during that time.”

Thompson’s words resonate with Winslet as she recalls the importance of balance in a demanding industry

As Winslet catapulted to fame following the release of Titanic in 1998, Thompson expressed concern for her well-being, as Winslet recalls “I think she was genuinely worried—not in a way that suggested I would go off the rails, since that’s not my personality—but just about how overwhelming the experience could be and what my next steps would entail,” Winslet shared.

Winslet remembered Thompson advising her, “It’s just as crucial not to work as it is to work. I have carried that thought with me ever since.” Reflecting on her ambitions, Winslet acknowledged, “I was determined not to let this opportunity slip away. I worried that if I worked too much, people might grow tired of me and start to say, ‘Let’s move on to someone else.’”

“I took Emma’s words seriously and continue to apply them in my career,” she added. Horowitz surprised Winslet with a pre-recorded message from Thompson and her husband, Greg Wise, who also starred in Sense & Sensibility.

“Your old friend Tommo here,” Thompson greeted Winslet in the video. “I wanted to remind you of when you told me, ‘I think you should talk to that guy,’ and I insisted, ‘No, he won’t be interested.’ You confidently said, ‘I think you’re wrong.’”

Wise, now 58, then appeared in the video, humorously adding, “That was thirty years ago—more than half of my life!” Thompson went on to share that Wise is collaborating with Winslet’s daughter, Mia Threapleton, 23, on an upcoming project. She concluded the message with warmth, stating, “We love you!”

In a 2020 essay, Winslet praised Thompson, highlighting her talent and genuine nature. “Emma is not only a wonderful actress; as a person, she is extraordinary and completely authentic, devoid of any film star pretense,” Winslet wrote, reminiscing about their time together on Sense & Sensibility.

“She truly integrated into our team, bringing a presence that made everyone feel relaxed and at ease. Em and I became like sisters, and we genuinely still are.” Lee is set to be released in theaters on Friday, September 27.
