On Monday, Sept. 30, the 28-year-old actress took to her Instagram Stories to clarify a statement she made in an interview with The Sunday Times. During the discussion, she mentioned it being “a struggle being a single mother,” but her words were misunderstood.
Turner explained that her comments had been taken out of context. She stated, “I have been widely misquoted today in publications where I have ‘stated’ that ‘it’s such a struggle being a single mother,’” emphasizing that she was speaking about the character she portrays in her new series Joan, not her own life.

She further clarified that she was referring to Joan, the British diamond thief and single mother she plays in the series, saying it was evident from the original interview. Turner concluded her message by expressing her admiration for single mothers who do it on their own, stating she is fortunate to have support.
In her interview with The Sunday Times, Turner spoke about connecting with her character, Joan Harrington, the focus of the 1980s-set series Joan. She expressed that being a mother helped her bring depth to the role, and added, “It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t handle it in the best way, but she fights hard for her daughter.”
Turner also emphasized the importance of children understanding the sacrifices parents make for them. She shared that filming the series during her divorce from Joe Jonas, with whom she has two daughters—Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2—offered her strength during a challenging time.
She reflected on how playing Joan had a serious impact on her, saying, “Joan changed me quite a lot. From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition.” Turner noted that the series arrived at a crucial moment in her life, teaching her to be resilient and ambitious.
On a lighter note, she joked about learning a clever ring swap trick from her character. Turner also spoke about societal views on motherhood, noting, “There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood.
Whether you go to work or stay home, you’re judged.” This latest interview follows Turner and Jonas reaching a settlement agreement a year after Jonas filed for divorce on Sept. 6.
