Anne Hathaway tends to keep details about her personal life under wraps. After four years of dating, she married Adam Shulman in an intimate ceremony in Big Sur, California, in 2012. The couple expected their first child in 2015, but Hathaway didn’t confirm the news until paparazzi photos of her baby bump surfaced.
In response, she shared a photo of herself on Instagram, wearing a two-piece swimsuit at the beach, explaining in the caption that she wanted to post a flattering image before the media could publish anything less favorable. Their son, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman, was born in March 2016.

As her pregnancy progressed into the second trimester, she only disclosed it to a few close colleagues. Since her baby bump remained small enough to fit into her costume as the Grand High Witch— a role that later required an apology—Hathaway saw no reason to inform everyone on set. She eventually made her pregnancy public through another Instagram post months later.
The actor also opened up about a miscarriage she experienced before having her sons. In a candid March 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway recalled the emotional toll, saying, “I was doing a play and had to give birth on stage every night.”
Instead of holding everything in, she relied on the support of friends, explaining, “I couldn’t pretend everything was fine on stage—it was too much to carry alone.” She had previously alluded to the miscarriage in a 2018 Instagram post when she announced her second pregnancy, using the moment to reach out to others struggling with similar challenges.
Reflecting on her journey, Hathaway shared with Vanity Fair that neither of her pregnancies had been smooth, making it important for her to acknowledge the challenges of becoming a parent. “It would’ve felt dishonest to present the experience as purely joyful,” she explained, emphasizing the need to represent the nuances many people face when trying to conceive.
Despite the difficulties, Hathaway remains open to the idea of expanding her family. During a 2022 interview with WSJ Magazine while promoting WeCrashed, she expressed, “There’s often this tendency to portray parenthood as entirely positive, but my experience has shown me it’s far more complicated than that.”
