James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ to Introduce Krypto the Superdog as a Mischievous Companion

Next year, fans will see Superman’s furry sidekick on the big screen. Krypto the Superdog is set to feature in James Gunn’s forthcoming “Superman,” as the director shared on social media Tuesday. This announcement coincides with October’s recognition as Adopt a Shelter Dog month.

Gunn shared that Krypto would be making his film debut this summer, revealing, “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu had a troubled past, coming from a hoarding situation where he lived with 60 other dogs and had little to no interaction with people.

Director James Gunn shares a heartfelt connection to Krypto, inspired by his rescue dog, Ozu, who transformed his life

He wreaked havoc in our home, damaging shoes and furniture, and even chewing on my laptop. It took considerable time before he was comfortable with us. I often thought about how challenging life would be if Ozu possessed superpowers, which led to Krypto’s introduction in the script and eventually altered the story, just as Ozu transformed my life.

What better way to introduce the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than during #AdoptAShelterDog month? By the way, Ozu is now a fairly good boy most of the time.” Originating from Superman’s home planet of Krypton, Krypto boasts superpowers and has featured in numerous animated DC films, though he has yet to appear in a live-action movie.

He will debut alongside David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman in Gunn’s film next summer before reuniting with Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” directed by Craig Gillespie, which is slated for release in June 2026.

Krypto, who first appeared in the 1955 DC Comics issue of “Superboy,” is consistently depicted as a white dog adorned with a gold collar and a red cape that matches Superman’s attire.

Like his famous Kryptonian companion, Krypto possesses super strength, heightened intelligence, and enhanced senses. Dwayne Johnson lent his voice to the character in 2022’s “DC League of Super-Pets,” alongside Kevin Hart, who voiced Batman’s faithful companion, Ace.
