Over a decade has passed since Christian Slater and his wife Brittany Lopez exchanged vows. Their initial encounter took place while Slater was vacationing in Florida, leading to a relationship that blossomed for a few years before they officially wed in December 2013 during two small ceremonies.
Together, Slater and Lopez are the proud parents of a daughter and a son, who join the actor’s older children, Jaden and Eliana, from a previous relationship. While they generally maintain a private life, Slater occasionally shares glimpses of their family dynamics.
Lopez frequently accompanies him to red carpet events, including the Golden Globes in 2018 and the Los Angeles premiere of Slater’s 2024 film, Unfrosted.
Although Slater did not win the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a TV series in 2018, he took a moment during the ceremony to express his love for Lopez in a heartfelt Instagram post.
He wrote, “So honored to attend the @goldenglobes with the most phenomenal woman on the face of the planet. Every moment I’m with you, I’m a winner. ❤️❤️❤️.”
Their love story began in Florida, where they first met at a resort in the Florida Keys back in 2010. On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in March 2013, Slater recounted his initial misunderstanding when he saw Lopez seemingly proposing to another woman.
He shared that he was enjoying breakfast when he saw her and an older lady, thinking it was an engagement moment. “It turns out it was her aunt,” he explained, revealing that he later spent time with Lopez in the Everglades.
In terms of her professional life, Lopez holds a degree in literature and economics from Carleton College in Minnesota. Initially, she worked at an auction house in Miami when she and Slater first met and later served as the director of corporate development at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami.
Growing up in Florida as one of three sisters, Lopez’s family included a twin who works in healthcare. Her father, Albert Lopez, is the owner of General Asphalt. Despite her typical upbringing, she humorously noted that she “had to import a Hollywood actor to find someone down-to-earth in Miami.”
Slater’s proposal to Lopez took place during a trip to Maine in 2012. He shared that he got nervous while asking her to marry him on the beach and clarified his words, saying, “Would you be mine?”
He had also involved her family in the proposal process, seeking her father’s permission and asking her twin sister for help in sizing the engagement ring he had sourced from Russia.
Their first wedding ceremony occurred unexpectedly at a Miami courthouse in early December 2013 when they intended only to obtain a marriage license.
They later celebrated with a more formal gathering on Christmas Day with close family and friends. During an episode of Live with Kelly in December 2016, Slater described their intimate wedding at a bed and breakfast in Illinois, which included just 14 guests.
The couple shares two children whose names have not been publicly revealed. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, in August 2019, followed by a son in July 2024. Slater is also the father of two older children, Jaden and Eliana, from his previous marriage to Ryan Haddon.
In an interview with PEOPLE in August 2024, he expressed how he feels “a lot more present” as a parent this time around. “Now, it’s all I really think about, and all I really care about, and all I want to be around,” he reflected on his changed perspective.
One memorable gift Slater gave Lopez was a taxidermied raccoon, a surprising Christmas present. During a June 2015 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he recounted how Lopez had wished for a pet raccoon, leading him to think that a stuffed version would be a suitable substitute. However, he humorously noted that the gift did not go over well.
In January 2016, upon winning his first Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a television series for his role in Mr. Robot, Slater made sure to express his gratitude to Lopez during his acceptance speech.
“My God, thank you for making me the happiest man alive,” he said, acknowledging her support and love. The couple attended the ceremony in matching black outfits, with Slater in a tuxedo and Lopez wearing an elegant long-sleeved lace gown.
