Kevin Smith continues to reflect on the influence of his relationship with Joey Lauren Adams, which remains vivid even after their split over 25 years ago. The two met while filming Mallrats in 1995, leading to Adams starring in Chasing Amy two years later alongside Ben Affleck. They later reprised their roles in the 2019 film Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
In a recent documentary titled Chasing Chasing Amy, Smith describes Adams as a vital source of inspiration. He acknowledges, “She was my muse,” highlighting how their time together shaped him.
Despite their relationship being short-lived—ending just months after Chasing Amy premiered in April 1997—Smith credits it with playing a pivotal role in his personal development. “That relationship defined who I am now. I never went back to the person I was before,” he stated.
The impact of Adams on Smith’s life extended into his marriage with Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, whom he met in early 1998 and married a little over a year later. He asserts, “Meeting Joey and the way she shaped me was essential to the success of my 20-year marriage.”
Smith and Jennifer, who recently marked 25 years of marriage, have one daughter, Harley Quinn Smith, who was born shortly after their wedding. In a September interview with PEOPLE, Smith was asked about the secrets to their strong partnership. He responded, “We’ve had no specific rules, which likely explains why it has worked for us for so long.”
He also shared his gratitude for his wife’s unwavering support throughout their journey together. “I travel a lot for work, and she’s often by my side. Lately, she’s been at home looking after the dogs,” he said.
“She has stood by me through these 25 years, always humbly stepping back,” he continued. “Being married to an artist—especially one who often gets lost in their own thoughts—can’t be easy. But she has done it with grace for a long time.”
Smith concluded by expressing his affection for his wife, stating, “I simply enjoy being in her presence. She’s my person.” Chasing Chasing Amy, which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, is currently available in select theaters.
