Dwayne Johnson found himself in fits of laughter thanks to Chris Evans while filming Red One. During the world premiere of their Christmas action-comedy in Berlin on November 3, Johnson shared insights about their on-set dynamic with PEOPLE, emphasizing how well they played off one another.
When asked how he managed to maintain a serious demeanor during some of the film’s comedic moments, Johnson lightheartedly replied, “’Cause I’m a pro,” but then admitted, “No, so many times I laughed. I am notorious for ruining takes. I laugh; it’s just what happens.”
However, he praised Evans, saying, “Chris is a very funny guy. He’s also very talented.” Johnson noted that both of them felt they had good chemistry, which proved to be true throughout the filming process.
Red One is inspired by an original story from Hiram Garcia, the head of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions. The film is directed and co-produced by Jake Kasdan, who previously worked on Johnson’s films Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel.
The plot revolves around an E.L.F. Task Force Commander, portrayed by Johnson, who teams up with a notorious bounty hunter, played by Evans, to rescue Christmas. According to the official synopsis, “After Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons) — Code Name: RED ONE — is kidnapped, the North Pole’s Head of Security (Johnson) must team up with the world’s most infamous bounty hunter (Evans) in a globe-trotting, action-packed mission to save Christmas.”
Joining Johnson, Evans, and Simmons in the film are Lucy Liu, Bonnie Hunt, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Nick Kroll, and Kiernan Shipka, creating an ensemble cast for this festive adventure.
During his conversation with PEOPLE in Berlin, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for Red One, stating that he was attracted to the project because he believed “the material was good” and he “loved” the script crafted by Chris Morgan, known for his work on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
Additionally, the wrestler-turned-actor revealed his desire to create a Christmas movie, but with a focus on quality. “I think when you get into acting… the idea of making a Christmas movie… you wanna make sure that you make a good one,” he remarked. “You don’t want to be part of a crew that makes a s—– Christmas movie. So I think we made a good one.”
