Deidre Hall is sharing insights on how the memory of the late Drake Hogestyn will be celebrated on Days of Our Lives. In a conversation with PEOPLE during a fan event for the soap on November 2, Hall reminisced about her collaboration with Hogestyn, who played John Black alongside her character, Marlena Evans.
The two received the Soap Opera Digest Award for Favorite Couple in 2005. When asked about the show’s plans to honor Hogestyn following his passing, Hall revealed some of the thoughtful gestures in store.
“The purpose of our show is family, both in its production and in our community,” she explained. “We aim to bring the holiday spirit to those who may not have it and offer companionship during Thanksgiving to those without family.
When we face the loss of a family member, we share that grief with our audience. Losing Bill and Drake is something our viewers will experience alongside us.”
Hall added that this shared experience helps the audience feel connected to the ongoing legacy of the show. While she was unable to disclose specific plans at this time, Hall hinted that Hogestyn’s legacy would continue to resonate with viewers through upcoming episodes.
“The show has plans to address that,” she mentioned. “We have scheduled episodes filled with flashbacks that highlight his remarkable history. Although these episodes won’t air until next year, audiences can anticipate some heartfelt tribute episodes.”
PEOPLE reported on September 28 that Hogestyn passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) from the beloved soap opera included heartfelt words from Hogestyn’s family announcing his death.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn,” the message stated. “He was faced with the daunting challenge of pancreatic cancer, which he confronted with remarkable resilience and courage. After a valiant struggle, he departed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones.”
The family’s tribute continued, stating, “He was an exceptional husband, father, papa, and actor. He cherished performing for the Days audience and was proud to share the stage with the finest cast, crew, and production team in the industry. His absence will be deeply felt by all of us who loved him during all the Days of our Lives.”
The heartfelt message was signed “The Hogestyn family.” At that time, a representative from Days of Our Lives confirmed that Hogestyn’s final episode had aired a few weeks earlier, on September 9.
