Quincy Jones’ death was officially attributed to pancreatic cancer, as confirmed by his death certificate, which PEOPLE obtained. This revelation comes after TMZ first reported the news of his passing. A representative for Jones has yet to respond to requests for comment from PEOPLE. Jones passed away on November 3 at the age of 91 in his Los Angeles home.
His family released a statement expressing their sorrow, saying, “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. Though this loss is overwhelming, we celebrate the remarkable life he led and acknowledge that no one will ever compare to him.”
They continued, “He was truly one of a kind and we will miss him dearly; however, we take comfort and immense pride in knowing that his love and joy were shared with the world through his creations.
His music and his boundless love will ensure Quincy Jones’ heart beats for eternity.” Jones was laid to rest in a private funeral in Los Angeles, attended only by close family members, as reported by the Associated Press. A larger public ceremony is being planned.
The family mentioned that the private memorial, described as “intimate,” included his seven children, his brother, two sisters, and immediate family members. They also expressed deep gratitude for the tributes and condolences pouring in from his friends and fans worldwide, adding that more details about a memorial celebration will be shared in due course.
Jones is survived by seven children: Jolie, 71, Rachel, 61, Martina, 58, Quincy III, 56, Kidada, 50, Rashida, 48, and Kenya, 31. Rashida, his daughter, honored him with a heartfelt Instagram post just days after his death, calling him “a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius.”
She shared, “I was fortunate enough to experience this love up close. I’ll miss his hugs, kisses, unconditional devotion, and guidance. Daddy, it’s an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.”
