Cody Johnson Credits Wife Brandi for CMA Awards Success, Reflects on How She Saved Him

Cody Johnson dedicates CMA win to Brandi, calling her his greatest inspiration

At the 58th Annual Country Music Association Awards on November 20, Cody Johnson took a moment to reflect on his monumental win for Album of the Year, crediting his wife, Brandi Johnson, for his success.

As he accepted the honor for his ninth studio album, Leather, Cody, 37, shared with PEOPLE that Brandi’s support played a pivotal role in his journey. He acknowledged her presence in the crowd, noting, “She was the first one out of her seat, maybe besides Jelly Roll.”

Without hesitation, Cody emphasized how crucial Brandi’s influence has been in his life. “If it weren’t for Brandi, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “I’d probably be dead or in jail.”

He continued by expressing deep gratitude for the woman who encouraged him to become the man he is today, as a husband, father, business leader, and artist. “I owe everything to her,” he remarked. “So, if you’re looking for a reason to applaud, that’s it.”

Cody’s CMA win was particularly as it placed him ahead of high-profile competitors like Kacey Musgraves, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and Jelly Roll. In addition to winning Album of the Year, Cody received nominations in multiple categories, including Single of the Year, Song of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Music Video of the Year for songs like “Dirt Cheap” and “The Painter.”

During the ceremony, Cody also took the stage with Carrie Underwood to perform their duet, “I’m Gonna Love You.” In a previous interview with PEOPLE in November 2023, shortly after releasing The Painter, Cody revealed that hearing the song’s demo reminded him of Brandi.

The line, “For every wall I built, she saw a canvas,” resonated deeply with him. “I’ve built walls around myself, both intentionally and unintentionally,” he explained. “But she saw potential, she saw growth, and without her, I wouldn’t be here.”

This isn’t the first time Cody has acknowledged Brandi’s impact on his success. In an interview with Cowboys & Indians magazine last year, Cody shared how Brandi’s sacrifices made it possible for him to pursue music full-time. She left college to support them by working two jobs, allowing Cody to chase his dreams.

“I owe everything I have to her,” he said. “She had faith in me when I didn’t.” Cody also spoke about the tough times when he wanted to quit music but Brandi encouraged him to push through. “If I had to give it all up for her, I’d do it,” he added.
