On Monday, Nov. 25, John Legend showcased his impromptu songwriting skills during a segment on The Jennifer Hudson Show. The 45-year-old musician charmed the audience by creating an impromptu song inspired by a humorous photo of his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
Jennifer Hudson, 43, kicked off the conversation by praising Legend’s ability to craft a song on the spot, to which he humbly responded, “I’m a songwriter, I am.” He went on to clarify that while he could create a tune, he was no freestyle rapper like Hudson’s boyfriend, Common, a noted freestyler.
Hudson then presented a challenge: “If I pull up a picture, can you make a song from it?” Legend agreed, saying, “I can try,” and the two headed over to a grand piano nearby. Hudson explained that Legend would have to compose a song based on a photo that would soon appear on the screen. Legend humorously added, “I’m really doing this impromptu, y’all. This is not fake, this is real.”
When a photo of Chrissy Teigen, 38, kissing a fish while standing with their children, Luna, 8, and Miles, 6, appeared, Legend couldn’t help but react affectionately. He then began playing soulful piano notes, singing, “Chrissy, oh why are you kissing a fishy?” as he continued with, “Don’t you have a man at home? He’s sitting all alone. Oh, don’t you have a man at home? Leave that fish alone.”
As Legend wrapped up his playful song, the audience erupted in applause, enjoying the lighthearted moment. Later in the show, Hudson and Legend teamed up for a duet of his 2004 hit, “Ordinary People,” with the two sharing the chorus after Legend started the first verse.
