Initially, Cher admitted to mistaking the KISS frontman for British actress Jean Simmons upon their introduction.
Despite her initial confusion, Cher recalled being “impressed” by Simmons by the end of the evening. Their first date took place the next night at a concert, though it was marked by tension as Simmons flirted not only with her but also with her friend.

The following day, Simmons called Cher to apologize, during which he unexpectedly declared his love for her—despite them not having even kissed yet. Reflecting on his sudden proclamation, Cher mused, “What is it with these men?”

During a People interview that same year, she described their two-year romance as the best relationship she’d ever had, even though they both saw other people during that time.
