Ricki Lake shared her heartfelt reflections on her late ex-husband Christian Evans’ battle with mental health issues. Recalling her experiences, the former talk show host described her efforts to support Evans, who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, as he endured “psychotic breaks” before his tragic death by suicide in 2017.
Speaking at End Well’s annual symposium on November 22, Lake explained to death doula Alua Arthur, “I didn’t fully grasp what bipolar disorder meant initially,” as reported by People. She noted that witnessing his transformation during a psychotic episode was even more shocking than the eventual loss of his life.
Lake recounted the lengths she went to in trying to help him. Despite her determination to get him medical care, it proved to be a significant challenge. Evans experienced his first psychotic break four years into their relationship and had a second episode two years later, culminating in his death in February 2017.
The couple first met in 2010 through a mutual friend, and Lake described their bond as magical, with both falling deeply in love. Their unconventional first encounter involved a “medical journey” with ayahuasca.
They became engaged in 2011, eloped in 2012, and, despite separating in 2014, remained close until Evans’ passing. Reflecting on the loss, Lake admitted she felt a sense of failure for being unable to save him. She shared, “I’m someone who gets things done, but with him, I couldn’t fix or save him.”
Now remarried to Ross Burningham, Lake continues to honor Evans by sharing his story. She expressed how the love and lessons she gained from him have profoundly shaped her. “Through loving and losing him, I’ve become the best version of myself,” she said, adding that she remains deeply connected to his memory. While his passing paved the way for her current happiness, she treasures both their time together and the life she now leads.
