For his upcoming 99th birthday, Dick Van Dyke has no extravagant plans in mind. The iconic actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Coldplay’s Chris Martin on Thursday to promote their music video for “All My Love,” set to debut on December 13, his birthday.
When asked about his plans for the special day, Van Dyke responded simply, “Hide out. Just going to hide out,” adding that while he likely wouldn’t host a party, his children would probably visit.
The star of Mary Poppins humorously acknowledged his age, stating, “I feel very old,” and joked, “Dementia. I get dementia once in a while. Like right now, I think I’m on the Jimmy Kimmel show.”
He continued with his light-hearted commentary about aging, noting that he is “old enough to be Joe Biden’s father,” with the current president being 82 years old, the oldest person ever inaugurated. Van Dyke has four children, with ages ranging from 62 to 74, some nearing Biden’s age.
Kimmel pressed for insights into the secret to Van Dyke’s longevity, to which the actor admitted, “I don’t know, I have no idea!” He mentioned that he still maintains an active lifestyle by going to the gym and emphasized the importance of staying active: “just keep moving.”
This appearance marked Van Dyke’s first since he chose not to attend the 2024 Emmys at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles in September. He also canceled his participation in the FanX event in Salt Lake City that took place from September 26 to 28.
Concerns about his health were raised when a paparazzo spotted him running errands during that time. “I’m pretty old,” he remarked, expressing hope to reach his 99th birthday.
