Jay-Z has initiated a request to dismiss the ra*pe lawsuit against him and is asking the court to publicly identify the accuser. In court documents acquired by Page Six, Shawn Carter, known as the “99 Problems” rapper, asserts that Texas lawyer Tony Buzbee has orchestrated an “extortionate campaign” against him for several months.
The documents allege that “That campaign was cynical and calculated to force payment of an exorbitant sum of money—Defendant would have to pay X millions of dollars irrespective of the truth, or else.” According to the filing, after Jay-Z refused to comply with the alleged extortion demands and sought to prove his innocence, the unnamed plaintiff and her publicity-seeking lawyer attempted to hinder his defense.
At 55 years old, Jay claims Buzbee has made “baseless allegations” against him while concealing the accuser’s identity under the pseudonym “Jane Doe.” The filing states, “These claims are not about justice for victims.
Nor are they about giving victims of sexual violence a voice,” asserting instead that they are “the next chapter in Attorney Buzbee’s sprawling extortion saga—a saga whose aim is base and measured in dollars.”
As part of his legal strategy, the father of three requests that the court either deny the plaintiff’s motion or promptly reveal her identity to the public. Alternatively, he seeks dismissal of Jane Doe’s civil lawsuit due to “lack of subject matter jurisdiction” because the plaintiff allegedly lacks standing.
The document further states, “Plaintiff has provided no evidence—no affidavit, declaration, or specific factual support—to establish the kind of severe harm necessary to justify pseudonymity.” Jay’s attorney has sent a separate letter to the judge requesting an expedited hearing due to the “intense media scrutiny” and the “highly sensitive nature” of the case.
The letter emphasizes, “Every day and in real-time, Buzbee continues to amplify false narratives, exploiting the legal process to generate media attention and damage Mr. Carter’s reputation.” It insists on the need for a swift hearing to resolve these matters and prevent additional harm.
On December 6, Jay accused Buzbee of “desperation tactics” for filing a temporary restraining order against Carter’s attorneys, which the judge denied. In response to these claims, Buzbee stated, “Sending a basic litigation demand letter and then filing a lawsuit isn’t extortion or blackmail. That’s the legal practice.”
He emphasized that he would not engage in what he termed a “silly sideshow” that attempts to move the focus from serious allegations raised by a courageous woman. Recently, the plaintiff updated her lawsuit from October against Sean “Diddy” Combs to include Jay-Z as the male celebrity allegedly involved in the ra*pe.
The amended lawsuit details an incident in which the woman, who was 13 at the time, alleged she was taken to a New York house party following the VMA Awards on September 7, 2000. She stated that after consuming a drink at the party, she began to feel “woozy” and went to lie down in a bedroom.
According to the suit, both Combs and Jay-Z entered the room, with the latter allegedly removing her clothing and restraining her while Combs ra*ped her. The plaintiff further claimed that Jay-Z also assaulted her during this time, with an unidentified female celebrity reportedly present.
In a vehement denial of the “heinous” allegations, Jay-Z criticized Buzbee for allegedly attempting to “blackmail” him. He expressed sorrow over the impact of the situation on his wife, Beyoncé, and their three children—Blue Ivy, 12, and twins Rumi and Sir, 7.
Jay stated, “My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people.”
He lamented the loss of innocence and stated, “Children should not have to endure such at their young age. It is unfair to have to try to understand inexplicable degrees of malice meant to destroy families and human spirit.” Combs’ legal team also commented on the situation, claiming that the amended complaint and the recent extortion lawsuit against Buzbee expose his lawsuits against Combs as “shameless publicity stunts.”
They reiterated that Combs has complete confidence in the facts and the integrity of the judicial process, asserting that “the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs never sexually assaulted or trafficked anyone—man or woman, adult or minor.”
Currently, Combs is in custody at a Brooklyn detention center, facing charges of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges, with a trial date set for May 5, and is also facing multiple lawsuits accusing him of various crimes, including ra*pe and sexual assault.
