Cameron Diaz attributes the strength of her marriage to Benji Madden to their commitment to therapy. During a recent episode of the “Artist Friendly” podcast with her brother-in-law, Joel Madden, the actress described therapy as an important factor in their relationship.
“It’s what we depend on, so you have that commitment to work on it,” said Diaz, 52, highlighting how it prevents her and Benji, 45, from repeating the same mistakes. She emphasized that therapy encourages them to reflect on their relationship by asking critical questions such as, “Why didn’t it work? How can I make it work? What’s my part? What’s the other person’s work?”

The couple has become more self-aware and feels better prepared to achieve a positive outcome in the future. Diaz explained that both partners must be fully committed to the process. “You can’t be in a marriage and have a family if … both people are not 100 percent every day. Nobody can be 99 and the other one be 100,” she stated.
Joel, 45, shared that he and his wife, Nicole Richie, also participate in therapy. He noted, “[It helps us] either resolve something or create a new understanding of a new process together,” comparing it to training at the gym to learn new moves and strengthen their bond.
Married since December 2010, Joel and Nicole, 43, have two children: daughter Harlow, 16, and son Sparrow, 15. Meanwhile, Benji and Diaz tied the knot in January 2015 and are parents to daughter Raddix, 4, and son Cardinal, who was born earlier this year.
Although they have maintained a relatively private relationship since they began dating in 2014, Diaz referred to her husband as the “best thing” that’s happened to her during an April 2020 interview on “Makeup & Friends.”
Benji frequently pays tribute to his wife on Instagram, once writing, “Happy Birthday to my beautiful wife, best friend, best partner in everything, ride or die, greatest Mom to our little girl, @Avaline wine boss, family chef, advisor, collaborator and everything else” last year.
