In New York City last night, Blake Lively attended a screening of “Wicked,” donning ruby red slippers that paid tribute to Dorothy’s iconic footwear from the classic 1939 film. The 37-year-old “Gossip Girl” star put a fashionable spin on the traditional shoes, selecting a striking pair of rhinestone-covered platform heels by Marc Jacobs, priced at $450, which were specially crafted as part of a “Wizard of Oz” capsule collection.
To let her eye-catching footwear shine, Lively chose a sleek white blazer paired with classic light-wash jeans. Although her vibrant floral ensembles from the “It Ends With Us Tour” are now behind her, she incorporated flower-themed elements into her outfit for the evening, such as an embroidered button-down, bold earrings, and a Chanel purse.
This time, the greenery seemed to pay homage to the film’s poppy fields. Ryan Reynolds, Lively’s husband, joined her at the screening, sporting a complete khaki ensemble, possibly resembling a scarecrow.
The couple posed at the exclusive event alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who portrayed Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, as well as cast members Ethan Slater and Peter Dinklage. While Lively’s shoes echoed the film’s specific style, the original shoes were not actually bright red, as L. Frank Baum’s books described them in a different color for the film adaptation.
“They’re not ruby,” costume designer Paul Tazewell explained to People regarding the original design. “In the book, they were these odd little silver boots.” However, to showcase various shades in the technicolor film, the studio opted for red footwear.
For the film, Tazewell created his own version — a silver pair adorned with swirls and jewels, gifted to Nessarose Thropp, Elphaba’s sister, by their father. Lively has also embraced thematic dressing beyond her own projects.
At the premiere of her husband’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” she coordinated with her best friend Gigi Hadid in superhero-themed outfits, with Lively channeling her husband’s Deadpool in an Atelier Versace jumpsuit, while Hadid donned yellow separates reminiscent of Wolverine. Next year, someone should definitely get her some green face paint for “Wicked: Part 2.”
