About The Franchise
The Muppets franchise has a long history. The Muppet Movie, the first Muppets feature, was released in 1979. The Great Muppet Caper was released in 1981, while The Muppets Take Manhattan was released in 1984. The franchise has been able to attract a new generation of fans with each subsequent release.
Sam and Friends, a short-form television series that aired from 1955 to 1961, gave birth to the Muppets. The Muppet Show (1976–1981), which garnered four Primetime Emmy Award wins and twenty-one nominations during its five-year run, helped the franchise acquire global notoriety after appearances on late-night talk programs and in advertising during the 1960s. The Muppets were purchased from the Henson family by Disney in February 2004, allowing the characters to reach a wider audience than in prior years.
