Jane Campion and Gerard Lee developed and wrote the mystery drama television series Top of the Lake, which Campion and Garth Davis directed. It was the first broadcast in 2013, followed by its sequel, Top of the Lake: China Girl, in 2017. It’s Campion’s first television project since the 1990s, An Angel at My Table.

The first season revolves around Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) and her investigation of the disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant girl. Whereas season 2 picks up five years later when Detective Griffin investigates the death of an unnamed Asian girl discovered on Beach. Cast
In both episodes, Elisabeth Moss portrays Robin Griffin, a Sydney detective specialising in sexual assault. The following people make up the rest of the cast:
- David Wenham stars as Al Parker, a Queenstown-based old-school detective sergeant who also runs a café where young offenders are given a second chance.
- Matt Mitcham, a Scotsman and head of the Mitcham family, is played by Peter Mullan. He is the town’s unofficial leader, feared by the locals yet with a complicated inner life.
- Johnno Mitcham, Matt’s estranged youngest son and Robin’s teenage sweetheart, is played by Tom Wright. After serving eight years in a Thai prison for narcotics offences, he recently returned to Lake top.
- GJ, played by Holly Hunter, is an androgynous Swiss man.
Location of the shoot
Filming of season 1 took place entirely on-site in Queenstown and Glenorchy, Otago, on New Zealand’s South Island, for over 18 weeks. While Queenstown is mentioned in the series, Glenorchy is used to represent the fictional town of Lake top. Moke Lake was used to film the sequences in the women’s commune.

While season 2 was shot in Sydney, Australia, unlike the first season, which was shot in New Zealand, it shows that detective Robin has been transferred to Sydney from Australia for her work. The crime scene location in this season is set up in Bondi Beach, where the suitcase of the dead body is found, and the investigation starts unveiling many hidden secrets. Also, the main lead travels around many brothers and murky corners of Sydney. New SouthWhales are also in the shooting location, and the actor talks about the place, the legalisation of the prostitute in the area, and the kind of the vibe places like these give you.
