The Strays follows the perilous fate of the Trentham family and a group of artists who lived together in 1930s Melbourne. Lily, the first-person narrator, is an only child, bored with her normal parents and drawn into this enchanting circle like a magnet. Strays play her Nicole Power on Kim’s Convenience. Shannon Ross has to relocate to Hamilton, Ontario, to become executive director of Hamilton East Animal Shelter and manage a team of her new companions.
Sitcoms usually take a while to get going. Sometimes weeks, sometimes months. This is especially true when you go back to the days of Cheers and Mary Tyler Moore. Both were such late starters that they could have been canceled today before they gelled: even The Office was too attached to the British Ricky Gervais model with an American pilot. It took several episodes to find his unique foundation. Tuesday night’s series premiere of last week’s CBC comedy show Strays is a case in point. Nicole Power will reprise his role as Shannon Ross, another rental car manager at Kim’s Convenience, who now runs an animal shelter in Hamilton, Ontario.
The pilot appears to have collapsed and pretends to be dead. In addition, he has two stories, each more interesting than the first. Red-haired Nikki Duvall shines as Nikki, a mean slacker coerced into Shannon by his aunt in a pushy job hunt. Nikki is super late and wants to have Fridays off, bringing new meaning to the term title. Her picky boss, Christian (Frank Cox O’Connell), overhears one of her endless personal calls and thinks she’s pregnant. This, he suggests, would explain “the listlessness, mood swings the entire time you spend on the toilet.”
