Sister Wives Season 17 Episode 9: Recap, Release Date & Streaming Guide

Reality Television is a genre of Television programming that documents unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown people rather than professionals. The reality Television genre started gaining momentum in the 1990s, and the viewership and ratings have never looked back.

The reality Television genre has produced some of the most highly-rated shows with record viewership, some of which have even become global franchises. One such American reality television show is “Sister wives,” which started airing on 26th September 2010 and is going strong into its 17th season.

The show is based on a polygamist family, where the father, Kody Brown, has four wives (Robyn, Meri, Janelle, Christine) and 18 children. The show has Deanie Wilcher as its producer, while Timothy Gibbons, Bill Hayes, Christopher Poole, and Kirk Streb act as the show’s executive producers.

However, the four-wives arrangement is legal as Kody Brown is officially married to Robin while the other three wives are with him in the form of a religious union. The family began the series living in Levi, Utah but shifted to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2011 and later moved into the township of  Baderville, Arizona.

The plot of Sister Wives Season 17, Episode 9

As mentioned earlier, the show follows the lives of Kody Brown and his four wives. In the very first season, the show televised Kody Brown’s first marriage to Robyn in 2010, becoming the first wife to enter the family. The crew kept filming their lives in anticipation of another season being scheduled which the TLC did commission in 2010 and started airing in March 2011.

The series premiered during a time when polygamy marriages were the talk of the town in the United States of America, with “Big Love” already airing for quite a few years back then, along with a lot more shows and movies regarding polygamy incoming. The series led to an investigation of The Brown family for possible prosecution. The family later sued the State of Utah, challenging its criminal polygamy laws.

The Browns prevailed in the district court in 2013. However, the case was dismissed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit on standing grounds in 2016. However, by the 16th season, we find the family separated and Kody Brown living a monogamous lifestyle with his first wife, Robyn, and together they bought their own house.

We find Meri living in a rented home in Flagstaff. We also find Janelle living on rent. However, she does spend the warm months in an RV on the family property,  Coyote Pass. We also see Christine getting a divorce from Kody in 2021 and planning to move to Utah to be closer to her older children.

Recap of Sister Wives Season 17 Episode 9

Sister Wives has been one of the most successful shows for TLC and has even drawn a record 2.26 million viewers in its first-ever episode. The show has, over the years, received mixed reviews, with many critics, such as Hank Stuever of the Washington Post, appreciating the small details of the family that are televised, such as their ration and daily food supply.

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times appreciated the matriarchal nature of the family, which is generally not seen in polygamic families. She also goes on to appreciate the bond the sister wives share with each other, which is much deeper than the bond each one of them shares with Kody.

On the other hand, Mark A. Perigard of The Boston Times says that Kody Brown has put his family at risk of prosecution, whom he claims to love a lot, on television, by televising his family affairs. Shari Puterman, a television columnist with Asbury Park Press, said that he believes in the sanctity of marriage and that polygamy is not what he thinks is right.

However, overall viewer reception has been good, and each episode has garnered decent reviews. A short recap of Sister Wives, Episodes 7 and 8, and Season 17 will help you understand what to expect from Sister Wives Season 17, Episodes 9. A lot of drama occurred in episodes 7 and 8 of the show.

In the 7th episode, we saw Kody not feeling good about officiating a marriage when his own marriage with Christine was in shambles with an imminent divorce. Even Janelle is not happy with Kody as he broke the protocols they laid out for a friend, while Christine and Kody also have a huge argument about selling the house and custody. In episode 8, we see the divorce fallout more intense than ever before.

On the other hand, Meri and Robyn had a deep conversation regarding the future of the family. While Ysabel already left for college in episode 6, there is more imminent drama regarding her as she does not like the place.
