True crime and crime drama fans have had their year so far. Hulu’s Under The Banner of Heaven, starring Andrew Garfield, premieres in April, Apple TV+’s Black Bird premieres in July, and the highly anticipated second season of Hulu’s The Only Murders in The Building hits June was first published in the genre booming. Crime dramas are experiencing a surge in popularity, major awards, and rave reviews.
Crime dramas are taking prime time spots on the latest Alaska Daily. ABC is wearing its hat to the crime drama ring on its upcoming show, Alaska Daily. It aims to tell the story of an infamous investigative journalist who goes missing and murders an Indigenous woman in a small town in Alaska and exposes the constant threat of violence.
Although technically a fictional story, steps have been taken to incorporate the real story and connect the show directly to the community it represents. Version staff served as executive producers and contributors to the production. Alaska Daily has made a clear overall effort to be deeply rooted in Anchorage, not just for continuity but for the kind of stories the show tells.
Alaska Daily Filming Locations

Although the series is set in Anchorage, Alaska, most Alaska episodes of Alaska Daily were filmed miles away. Filming for the series reportedly began in August 2022 in the city of Burnaby, Columbia, British Columbia, Canada. Cabin Radio also reported that some scenes from Alaska Daily were filmed in Data, a First Nations community in Canada’s Northwest Territories.
Additionally, Hillary recently confirmed that one episode was indeed filmed in Alaska. The actress told the Boston Herald, “The funny thing is that my husband just turned 50 and is going to Alaska.” It was on his wish list to go to The Alaska Daily, which is shot throughout Metro Vancouver, a metropolitan area centered around Vancouver. The 1745 U.S. Consulate has been recreated at the Fortress Film Center on West 8th and Pine Streets. Some sequences in the first season appear to have been filmed on Franklin Street in the city in the 1950s. Additional portions of “Alaska Daily” were recorded in a community on the northern tip of Howe Sound and in another community, Squamish.
The production unit particularly shot many scenes at Squamish Spit and Estuary, a popular tourist destination with great views of Stawams, his chief. Several exterior scenes were shot along the Shannon Falls Road leading into the famous Shannon Falls State Park. Squamish’s economy is based primarily on tourism and outdoor recreation such as hiking, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and rafting.
A significant portion of ‘Alaska Daily’ is filmed in the North Slave region, the most populous borough of the Northwest Territories. The cast and crew were spotted filming some scenes from the first season at Dettah, a First Nations community. The band’s office was decorated to represent the Meade Police Department, while a fake graveyard was built on set for several scenes.
U.S. and Alaskan flags flew from several Dettah buildings during filming, alleged “Meade Police” trucks drove through the community, and producers set up a cemetery for show purposes. When it closed early, NWT film commissioner Nancy Shaw said the Alaska Daily’s visit “fits” the territory’s prospects of attracting other big-budget dramas to complement its regular meals and said it was “really exciting.”
Is Alaska Daily based on True Story?
Although the characters depicted in the ABC series are entirely fictional, violence against Native American women in Alaska is very real. Per Her Newsweek, the show was inspired by a series of investigative reports from the Anchorage Daily News entitled “Lawless,” which looked at Alaska’s alarming rates of sexual violence.
Hillary told Newsweek He said: But the story was just shocking. She added: it sucks, so something has to be done.” Hillary said a “big part” of her decision to join the cast of Alaska Daily was to raise awareness of the issue.
