The horror anthology series American Horror Story was conceived by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Since 2011, the limited series’ creators have reimagined the horror subgenre with episodes that include a spooky asylum, a coven of witches, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel, and even the end of the world.
Many avid viewers of the TV series have emerged, eagerly awaiting the terror that the next episode will bring. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series, the forerunner of the contemporary limited series format, has broadcast ten parts and has been renewed for a 13th. This is the longest one-hour series in FX history.
The final season of American Horror Story is set in New York City in the early 1980s when AIDS began depleting the LGBTQ+ population. There is a big twist with a serial killer and a mystery disease that is AHD instead of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. American Horror Story season 11 episodes 7 and 8 teasers hint that things will worsen as AHS: NYC ends.
The remaining primary cast members for season 11 include Patti LuPone, Billie Lourd, Denis O’Hare, Leslie Grossman, Sandra Bernhard, and Isaac Powell, a mix of mostly all seasoned actors from American Horror Story. Joe Mantello, Russell Tovey, and Charlie Carver, newbies to the AHS, have joined them this year.
Critics’ reactions to American Horror Story have ranged greatly, from the fervent to the outright negative. Some critics, however, provided mixed reviews, such as Mary McNamara of The Los Angeles Times, who criticized the heavy-handed metaphors and brutal violence. Chuck Barney of the San Jose Mercury News stated, “Most TV shows, after all, swiftly fade from memory. This one will haunt your nightmares.”
However, American Horror Story has developed a cult audience to the point where some fan art has been used to promote successive seasons. Due to its enormous popularity, American Horror Story spawned a successful American Story series that has garnered global praise and won numerous Emmy Awards.
