In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Kailyn Lowry has opened up about the private birth of her “incredible” son, Rio, with her boyfriend, Elijah Scott, marking their first child together.
The 31-year-old podcaster, who also shares sons Creed (3) and Lux (6) with her ex Chris Lopez, 9-year-old Lincoln with her ex Javi Marroquin, and 13-year-old son Isaac with her ex Jo Rivera, had been surrounded by rumors for months regarding her fifth child’s arrival. However, Kailyn chose a different approach this time, opting to keep the news under wraps.
Explaining her decision, Kailyn stated, “I wanted to be able to tell my own story on my own terms and kind of share what information I wanted to share instead of being within a contractual obligation or storyline.” She first disclosed the news on her Barely Famous podcast.
Admittedly, Kailyn wasn’t initially prepared to share her private family news but felt compelled as rumors continued to circulate. She said, “I feel like it was ripped out from under me time and time again… I kind of feel like my hands are tied. People are announcing it for me, and so, at this point, I might as well just talk about it.”
Kailyn emphasized that her close circle of family and friends was aware of the pregnancy, and they even held an intimate baby shower. The shower offered a much-needed disconnect from the world since attendees were asked not to bring their phones.
However, not everything remained private, as the news of the baby’s arrival leaked from the hospital. Kailyn mentioned that they are addressing this violation “internally” with the medical facility.
Despite not actively trying for a child together, Kailyn and Scott were pleasantly surprised by the pregnancy. Kailyn noted that Rio brought much joy into their lives, particularly after a challenging year marked by a lawsuit and her battle with depression.
Although a mother of five, Kailyn humbly stated, “Do you ever really become a parenting expert? Because every child is so different, and every experience is so different… I feel like every experience is so new that I wouldn’t say I’m an expert.”
Looking ahead, Kailyn is adjusting to her new role as a mother of five. She is savoring the newfound normalcy without the constant presence of cameras and the freedom to manage her daily life without constraints.
She concludes, “And I’ll just stay busy with motherhood and the podcast.” You can catch new episodes of Kailyn Lowry’s Barely Famous podcast, released every Friday on various podcast platforms.
