Before meeting his fiancée Zooey Deschanel, Jonathan Scott experienced a memorable yet disastrous date from his single days. During a recent appearance on the podcast “You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes,” the 45-year-old television personality shared the amusingly awkward tale of a date that went south.
Scott began his story by recounting an evening with someone he had known socially through mutual acquaintances. The pair went out to dinner, but the date took an unexpected turn. He recalled, “We went out for dinner, and she spent the entire dinner making fun of the strangers in the restaurant. Literally, their physical attributes were the way they were talking, and I was so confused. I’m like, ‘Is the conversation that dull that you want to make fun of this elderly couple that’s over here?’ It was really weird.”
By the end of the evening, Scott decided to be honest and told his date, “I don’t think this is a match; I don’t think we should do this again.” However, this didn’t sit well with her. “She lost it on me,” he recalled. “She threw a drink at me and called me an a–hole in the middle of the restaurant.”

Scott explained that he wanted to end the night there, but his date had different plans and wanted to continue on to a bar, leading to an unpleasant scene. “It was horrible,” he added, reflecting on the incident.
When asked about the beverage that was tossed, Scott revealed it was white wine, but he remained unfazed, quipping, “None of my wardrobe is expensive, so I’m totally fine with that.”
During the podcast, Scott also delved into his experiences with love and relationships, particularly finding love with Zooey Deschanel in his 40s. He explained, “The problem is when you’re younger, you don’t know what you want in a relationship.” He reflected on past relationships where he felt isolated and unheard, saying, “I’m not going to put up with that bulls—. I know I’m not perfect, but I’m not going to put up with these baseline things.”
He emphasized the importance of respecting one another’s emotions and stated, “If somebody doesn’t respect you enough to understand that you have emotions, you have a right to feel a certain way. They’re either a narcissist, and they don’t give a s—, or they’re so inexperienced in love and emotion that I’m too mature for that, and I don’t want to be with somebody like that.”
Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel happily announced their engagement in August, following four years of dating. They shared their joy with the world in a joint Instagram post during a trip to Scotland, captioned, “Forever starts now.” Deschanel proudly displayed her sparkling engagement ring, adorned with clear, pink, and purple stones in a floral motif.

They initially met in a 2019 episode of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke when Jonathan and his twin brother and Property Brothers co-star, Drew Scott, were paired up with Zooey Deschanel and her sister, Emily Deschanel. Jonathan admitted, “I’m not gonna lie, this I did not see coming,” describing Deschanel as someone who cares about helping one another through challenging moments.
Although they are still in the early stages of planning their wedding, the couple expressed their enthusiasm for celebrating their love with a memorable event. Deschanel humorously noted, “We do love to throw a party.”
