During her recent tour stop celebrating the 25th anniversary of her debut album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” the renowned artist Lauryn Hill confronted the issue of her consistent tardiness at shows. This took place in Los Angeles on Saturday night, where she took the stage, albeit slightly behind schedule, and candidly addressed her lateness.
Addressing the eager crowd, Lauryn Hill acknowledged her punctuality challenges by saying, “Yo, y’all are fortunate I make it on this stage every night.” She went on to explain her motivation, emphasizing that she doesn’t do it because she’s allowed to but because she stands there in the name of a higher power. “God is the one who allows me to do it, who surrounded me with family and community when there was no support,” she stated.
In her reflections, Hill also mentioned a period when her first album became incredibly popular, but nobody came forward to help her make a follow-up. She responded by touring the globe and giving repeated performances of the same album. “Because we are survivors, and we’re not just survivors, we’re thrivers,” was the message she sent, highlighting her tenacity and resolve.
Lauryn Hill has previously addressed her tendency to keep supporters waiting. The 48-year-old performer clarified on her Facebook page in 2020 that her tardiness was not an indication of her disregard for her followers.
She stressed, instead, that she was “aligning her energy” with the situation. According to her, “I don’t show up late to shows because I don’t care, and I have nothing but love and respect for my fans. The challenge is aligning my energy with time, taking something that isn’t easily classified or contained, and trying to make it available for others. I don’t have an on/off switch. I am at my best when I am open, rested, sensitive, and liberated to express myself as truthfully as possible.”
