Barton Cowperthwaite, aged 31 and known for his role in Tiny Pretty Things, shared on Instagram last Friday that he has been diagnosed with brain cancer. In a poignant post, he revealed that a sizable brain tumor, identified as at least a stage 2 Glioma, was discovered the day before, necessitating upcoming brain surgery.
In his Instagram update, Cowperthwaite emphasized the localized nature of the tumor, stating that it had not spread to any other part of his body. Glioma, a prevalent type of brain tumor originating in glial cells, constitutes about 33% of all brain tumors, as per John Hopkins Medicine.
Detailing the medical perspective, Cowperthwaite expressed the confidence of his doctors in successfully removing a significant portion of the tumor through brain surgery. He acknowledged the inevitable inclusion of scans and check-ups in his future while also mentioning plans for seeking second opinions with his family.
Scheduled for surgery in the middle or end of the following week, Cowperthwaite conveyed his determination to share his journey openly on social media. Despite the challenging circumstances, he expressed optimism about bouncing back to his former self post-surgery and rehabilitation.
Accompanying his message was a photo of Cowperthwaite in a hospital gown flashing a peace sign. Additionally, he shared two brain scans revealing the substantial tumor in the upper hemisphere of his skull.
Before gaining prominence on Netflix’s Tiny Pretty Things as Oren Lennox, Cowperthwaite had appeared in minor roles in TV shows such as Girls5eva and Center Stage: On Pointe. He was also featured in the film Imposters.
Support poured in from his colleagues, with Casimere Jollette, his Tiny Pretty Things co-star, expressing love and sending healing vibes. Rudy Pankow from Outer Banks commented, lauding Cowperthwaite’s resilience and offering unwavering support through the challenging journey ahead.
